  • History

    • The town’s history dates back to 1666 when Connecticut settlers landed on the shores of the Passaic River. The township’s founders purchased a track of land known as the Newark Settlement from the indigenous Lenape. Homes, courts, schools and farming were established. In 1678 the settlers purchased a second track of land from the Winacksop and Shenacktos who owned the Watchung Mountain, extending the Newark settlement to approximately 60 square miles. Fast forward to 1863 when the Township of West Orange was officially formed by legislative act by combining land from the Fairmount Township with a section of Orange Township. Most famously known as the home of Thomas Edison National Historic Park which includes Thomas Edison’s home and his laboratories, West Orange is a diverse community with a rich cultural history and a wide range of home architecture and values. From estates in the gated community of Llewelyn Park, new single family homes in Vizcaya, Victorians, Colonials and modern and contemporary style homes, you are sure to find the right home in West Orange. The Town is close to highways and an easy commute to New York City.
