  • History

    • Maplewood shares its history with South Orange and other communities that were part of what was known as the Newark Settlement. In the late 1600 the settlement’s founders purchased land from the Lenape people and other indigenous peoples. The tract of land at one point in time covered over 60 miles.  Early industry included farming, orchards, mills and light manufacturing.  Maplewood once known as Jefferson Village, North Farms, Middleville, and Hilton had a few starts in its formation.  Formed from Annexing portions of Clinton Township, South Orange, Town of Orange and Vailsburg, Maplewood was formally established in 1922 when South Orange Township officially annexed portions of land to   The Township grew with the expansion of the railroad, seeing a boom in complimentary businesses. Maplewood was fortunate in its early days to attract talented architects committed to high quality building standards and architectural design.  The standards from the early days have led to the distinctive communities we enjoy today.
